In The Backing – Fly Fishing for Redfish

A beautiful blue skied morning, low in the mid 60’s with a forecasted high in the upper 70’s, wind coming from the SE at 0-5 mph; cruising glass like water in coastal marsh, back lakes and canals of south Louisiana, sitting side by side with the best fishing buddy in the entire universe, my son Nick.  You know, it doesn’t getting any better than that; a bucket list trip and to share it with someone extremely special and that truly appreciates what is going down.  Nick and I had redfish on the brain, which felt like just short of eternity, since we made the deposit with Jeremy Chavez, owner / operator of Casting Tales.  And we were finally on the water and doing it!!

As a dad, my sole goal and mission for the day was to see Nick go into muscle failure on the deck of a skiff…….well, mission accomplished after a 20 pound black drum and then immediately following a 24 pound 40″ bull redfish.  He easily gave up the deck for his old man to take a swing at a fish or two, LOL.  Unlike Nick who listened extremely well to Jeremy on where to place the fly and the OJT of learning to strip set a hook; I missed two big reds and finally strip set the hook on a 15 to 18 pound black drum.  The hunt wasn’t easy even though we had great weather conditions; it had rained the night before and made for very stain water conditions.  We slid right up on many fish just in time to see the mud boil and a flash.

Jeremy did a fantastic job of keeping on track and poled many miles of shoreline, looking for the right opportunity to get Nick and I into a fight.  He has a serious passion for fishing, educating and his clients success.  Nick and I consider Jeremy a friend and look forward to the next time we can have the honor of setting foot on his boat again.

Nick and I did a product review back in January on the Piscifun Sword fly reel and promised that we would field test it on this very trip and we did, in fact it was the only reel we used all day.  If you are looking for a very well made, smooth and precise reel with an exceptional drag system, capable of turning big fish; then the Piscifun Sword reel is something to look at, especially given the price point!

Okay, enough reading.  Grab some popcorn and watch some cool fly fishing for reds and black drum in Cocodrie, LA!
